Siberians really are a wonderful breed. They are ideal for many different kinds of people. They have been a welcomed relief to many animal lovers with cat allergies. Lots of people who love dogs enjoy the companionship of these loyal cats. Don’t be surprised if your Siberian greets you at the door with “tail quivers”, enjoys a game of fetch, or loves a romp around in a wet bathtub – mine do! Many Siberians also have very sweet voices consisting of meows, chirps and trills.
Siberians are great with children. Starting at 3 yrs old, I would find my daughter carrying our cats through the house. Anaya, one of our females, is known for taking her toys to my daughter. They love to play together.
Siberians are also great with other animals. When it comes to my dog and the cats , I never can keep up with who is chasing who, or who is winning in their newest wrestling match.
Due to the Russians being discouraged from owning pets for so long these cats had to survive on their own. As a result they have become very hardy and healthy. The first Siberians came to the United States in 1990 thanks to Elizabeth Terrell of Starpoint Cattery.
Historically the Siberian is a medium to large breed of cat that originated in the cold regions of Siberia. With a moderately long to longhair triple coat they are fully equipped to withstand harsh weather conditions. Don’t let all of this hair scare you, a good combing once to twice a week is sufficient. Their coats come in all different colors and patterns.
The overall appearance of the Siberian is one of strength and power. They have a medium/large wedged head, rounded eyes slightly angled towards the base of the ear, rounded ear tips, big rounded feet with hair tufts and a barrel-shaped, solid body. Their faces are full of expression. They take up to five years to fully mature. Many have said, “they become even more beautiful with age”.
